Hedingham Castle

Halstead, Essex

Information For Hedingham Castle

Hedingham Castle stands proudly in Castle Hedingham near Halstead in Essex, a magnificent Norman fortress that has watched over the countryside for more than nine centuries. Built around 1140 by Aubrey II de Vere, the castle remains one of the best‑preserved Norman keeps in Europe. For five hundred years it was the seat of the Earls of Oxford and today it is still owned by the de Vere descendants, Jason and Demetra Lindsay. Its towering keep, double height Banqueting Hall and mellow stonework are a breathtaking backdrop to exploration and celebration. Beyond the ramparts lie 160 acres of rolling parkland, lake and woodlands, all within easy reach of London, Cambridge and Stansted Airport. Visitors can climb the winding staircase, stand beneath twenty‑foot arches, wander through formal gardens and discover the Tudor bridge and Georgian mansion. Whether you are drawn by history, architecture or simply the romance of a fairy‑tale castle, Hedingham offers a unique blend of heritage and hospitality. It welcomes day visitors on selected dates and plays host to weddings, retreats and private parties, allowing modern guests to follow in the footsteps of kings and queens.
